Hand Hygiene: A Cornerstone of Infection Prevention in Macerata and Beyond
Empowering healthcare and Community Through Education
In a proactive move to bolster public health, a complete hand hygiene education project was unveiled at the Macerata hospital library yesterday, coinciding with World Hand Hygiene Day, as championed by the World Health Organization. This initiative underscores the critical role of proper handwashing in curbing the spread of infectious diseases.
the project, a collaborative effort spearheaded by Giorgia Scaloni and Nadia Mosca, medical directors from the Macerata and Civitanova hospitals, saw the active participation of third-year nursing students from the Polytechnic University of the Marche, Macerata didactic center. Alessia Baldassarri, a hospital hygiene specialist, conceived the idea, which blossomed into a multifaceted campaign.
Innovative Tools for Enhanced Awareness
Leveraging thier academic knowledge and creative talents, the nursing students developed informative posters and brochures tailored for both pediatric and adult audiences. These materials are complemented by engaging videos accessible via QR codes, designed to promote consistent and effective hand hygiene practices across diverse community and healthcare settings.
The educational resources, now available throughout the Ast healthcare facilities, were presented to healthcare professionals during the launch event, ensuring widespread adoption and implementation.
The Science Behind clean Hands: Reducing Healthcare-Associated infections
The importance of hand hygiene extends beyond a simple act; it’s a scientifically proven method to significantly reduce the incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). according to recent studies, diligent hand hygiene practices can lead to a potential reduction in the rate of infections related to assistance (ICA) ranging from 35 to 55%
.
Evidence of scientific literature have shown a potential reduction in the rate of infections related to assistance (ICA) ranging from 35 to 55% implementing simple prevention measures, such as properly to sanitize their hands.
Massimo Sartelli, president of Simpios (Italian company for the prevention of infections in health organizations), and Macerata surgeon.
This underscores the profound impact of this seemingly basic intervention on patient safety and overall healthcare quality. HAIs,such as catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and surgical site infections (SSIs),pose a notable burden on healthcare systems globally, increasing morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Effective hand hygiene is a crucial defense against these preventable infections.
A Call to Action: Prioritizing Hand Hygiene for a Safer Community
Alessandro Marini, general manager of the Ast, emphasized the collective responsibility in maintaining high standards of hand hygiene. I invite citizens and health workers to maintain high attention to the hygiene of hands in the community and above all in hospital environments, as it is indeed a guarantee of safety of care. A simple gesture of responsibility, capable of preventing infections, affecting the quality of the assistance and safety of patients at all levels of the health system
