Severe Weather Threat: Tornadoes, High Winds, and Hail in the Plains

A robust fall cold front has set the stage for severe weather in the Central Plains, Midwest, and South, with the potential for a few tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail. Weather.com shares the latest updates and insights from their graphics meteorologist, Jonathan Belles.

Wednesday Update: Severe Weather Probable on Wednesday Afternoon and Evening

Severe weather is probable in the Central Plains on Wednesday. The threat area will stretch from the Corn Belt to the Southern Plains, with tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail all possible risks. The main concern regions are shaded red, particularly in eastern Kansas and neighboring states like the Kansas City and Wichita metro areas.

Jonathan Belles highlights that a strong tornado threat (EF2 or greater intensity) is possible in eastern Kansas, far northwest Missouri, and northeast Oklahoma. Damaging wind gusts are likely in some of these locations, especially around these key areas.

Timing: Mid-Afternoon to Late Evening

The severe weather threat is expected from mid-afternoon in parts of Nebraska and central Kansas to late evening in Missouri and Arkansas. A few weakening storms might linger into the overnight hours on the periphery of the orange area on the map below.

Thursday: Severely Reduced Risk, South Partly Affected

The risk of severe weather decreases as the cold front pushes eastward by Thursday. There’s still the possibility of strong thunderstorms that could bring about strong wind gusts, particularly in the Ohio Valley and the Deep South. An isolated tornado in the lower Mississippi Valley is a possibility, although less likely.

Halloween trick-or-treating might also be affected by the chance of thunderstorms. For a comprehensive ariaction, drivers are advised to access the storm updates here.
