Northwest Italy Grapples with Torrential Rainfall and Landslides

The Northwest is already experiencing the brunt of the storm. Persistent, heavy rains have been battering the region, with the Verbano area particularly affected. Rainfall accumulations have reached a staggering 280 mm in some locales, leading to critical infrastructure challenges.Landslides have been reported in Ossola, specifically near Pontegrande, where debris and mudflows have obstructed roadways, necessitating immediate safety interventions.

“The situation in Verbano is particularly concerning, with rainfall exceeding critical thresholds. We are working to ensure the safety of residents and mitigate further damage.”

Adding to the complexity, higher elevations in the Cuneo area, such as Ostana, are experiencing heavy snowfall. Accumulations have already reached 50 cm of fresh snow, transforming the Piedmontese Alps into a winter landscape. These conditions, coupled with dropping temperatures, pose additional challenges for transportation and infrastructure.

Regional Breakdown: areas at High Risk

Piedmont is considered among the most vulnerable areas, with forecasts predicting up to 300 mm of rain within a short period. This deluge raises the specter of flooding, landslides, and broader hydrogeological instability. Compounding the risk, the rains will be accompanied by strong gusts of wind and the potential for hailstorms.

Other regions, including Liguria, Valle d’Aosta, Tuscany, and Sardinia, are also bracing for worsening conditions, with widespread showers and instability expected. The western Alps anticipate significant snowfall, potentially exceeding 2 meters at higher elevations (above 2500 meters).

While the Triveneto region will experience bad weather, the intensity is expected to be less severe. A gradual improvement is anticipated in the evening. The Center-south will see more variable conditions, with rain possible in Campania and the Calabria Tirrenica. Elsewhere, a milder, windier climate will prevail, with a strengthening Scirocco wind potentially reaching gusts over 100 km/h. The Ionian and central-northern Adriatic coasts face the risk of storms.

cyclone Intensification and Further Threats

Concerns are mounting regarding the potential intensification of the Mediterranean cyclone near Sardinia. this development could lead to a new wave of severe weather, characterized by intense rains, thunderstorms, and possible storms across various regions. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates closely.

According to the European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL), Mediterranean cyclones, also known as Medicane, are relatively rare but can be extremely risky. They share characteristics with tropical cyclones, including a warm core and organized circulation, and can produce hurricane-force winds and torrential rainfall.

Preparing for the Storm: Safety Measures and Resources

Residents in affected areas are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Stay informed about weather updates and warnings from local authorities.
