Berlin’s educational landscape is experiencing turbulence as the Education and Science Union (GEW) initiates a three-day warning strike. This action,commencing today,involves teachers,educators,social workers,and school psychologists,all advocating for improved working conditions. While complete instructional paralysis is not anticipated, given past strike participation rates, the disruption is nonetheless significant for students and families.

Union Demands Clash with Senate Stance

For approximately four years, the GEW has persistently pushed for a collective agreement focused on health protection. Though, the Senate maintains that Berlin, as part of the collective bargaining community of German states (TDL), cannot independently negotiate such an agreement. The GEW has been calling for a so -called collective agreement for health protection for around four years, which includes smaller classes and other relief for employees.

Katharina Günther-Lüsch (CDU), Berlin’s Education Senator, has voiced strong disapproval of the strike, particularly due to its timing during crucial central examinations. These include high school french exams and MSA mathematics exams.
