Scandlines’ Zero-Emission Ferry Nears Completion After Triumphant Sea Trials

Paving the Way for Lasting Shipping: Scandlines’ Electric ferry project

Scandlines is making critically important strides towards its goal of emission-free operations with its new zero direct emission ferry. Following successful sea acceptance tests (SAT) in the Marmara Sea, Turkey, the vessel is poised to revolutionize ferry travel. This initiative aligns with the growing global push for sustainable shipping solutions, as highlighted by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.

Rigorous Testing Ensures Operational Readiness

The ferry recently underwent two weeks of intensive testing, where its batteries and electrical systems were put through their paces. The propulsion system was also assessed for the first time. These trials, conducted by Cemre shipyard in collaboration with Scandlines and under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register, were crucial in verifying the vessel’s performance under realistic operating conditions.

During the two weeks of tests at sea, the batteries and electrical installations of the ship were tested. The propulsion system could also be seen for the first time.

Rasmus Nielsen, Vice President of Fleet and Scandlines Administration

Currently, the ship is back at the equipment dock, where Scandlines, Cemre Shipyard, Lloyd’s Register, and the Danish Maritime Authority are meticulously testing, verifying, and documenting its compliance with all applicable construction regulations and specifications. This comprehensive process ensures that all equipment functions as intended, any challenges are addressed proactively, and the crew is thoroughly trained in the ship’s operation and maintenance.

Crew Preparedness: A Key Component of Success

Scandlines emphasizes crew preparedness, providing initial training at their Rødbyhavn facility and further specialized training at the shipyard. This training covers all safety procedures, ensuring the crew is well-equipped to handle the complexities of operating a cutting-edge, zero-emission vessel.this proactive approach to training is essential for the safe and efficient operation of the ferry.

Anticipated Journey and Future Operations

Upon final delivery to Scandlines, the ferry will embark on its maiden voyage to Rødbyhavn, helmed by a portion of its future crew. Planned stops include Gibraltar and Brest, France. This journey marks a significant milestone for Scandlines and the broader maritime industry.

it will be a vrey important day for us when we see our new ship sailing towards Rødbyhavn, and we are very excited to put it into service. With our first ferry fully free of emissions, we take a big step towards our goal of navigating without direct emissions on the Rødby-Puttgarden route for 2030.

Michael Guldmann Petersen,Director of Operations at Scandlines

the ferry is slated to officially commence operations on the Rødby-Puttgarden route in late 2025,following a naming ceremony at Fehmarnbelt. This deployment is a crucial step in Scandlines’ commitment to achieving emission-free navigation on this route by 2030,contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation network.
