Not even a pandemic has prevented Santiago Segura from releasing the film ‘Father there is only one 2: The arrival of the mother-in-law’ less than a year after its predecessor. The first part saw the light on August 1, 2019. Normally, it would have debuted on Friday, as is the custom, but finally it has opted to bring the premiere forward a couple of days, and thus try to give a certain corner to the coronavirus, always on the lookout, to avoid a new possible closure of the rooms. And also, because he has the feeling that “the world is more in need of comedy than ever.” In this sequel, Santiago Segura takes up the story of Javier, whom he embodies himself, and Marisa (Toni Acosta). The two have to face a new family expansion, and that translates into the arrival of the mother-in-law (Loles León) – if they were few, accompanied by a Samoyed dog – who calls into question the paternal authority.
-How did the decision to advance the film’s premiere come about?
-I firmly believe that it is important to safeguard health, but at the same time reactivate the economy. Both Sony, the distributor, and the rest of the film’s producers were aware of the critical moment in which they are living: the box office has dropped 80%, the large North American productions have moved their release dates to take care of their product, as is logical , and protect your investments … It may be wise, but we thought that cinema needs to show films. Cinema without movies can not survive, and it may not be the best time to release, but if we wait for a better time to release, perhaps many cinemas are not there to see it.
-And what reaction do you expect?
– Joy and enthusiasm, mixed with laughter and smiles. You always hope for the best. The illusion must be maintained, even if they call you delusional.
-Are you afraid that the public will not dare to go?
-The regrowths in cinemas and theaters today have been zero. I hope that people go with calm and a responsible attitude, to go to the movies and anywhere. A simple gathering of friends can be infinitely more dangerous than the cinema right now.
– You have already approached the rooms?
-I went with my daughters to see ‘Singing in the rain’, and then I have also been in several chains to see the new security measures that the rooms have implemented to make the cinemas safe spaces where they can enjoy themselves. The effort has been great, but necessary. A space for enjoyment should not pose a risk to health.
-He always jokes about his skills as an actor, but he doesn’t lose one when he is the director. Are you ‘bored’ if you don’t act in the movies you direct?
-Well, I really like to interpret, and since I have found a director who always counts on me to star in the films he makes. I don’t want to let him escape.
-What does the figure of the mother-in-law represent for you?
-In the film it is clearly an element of conflict, because Javier sees his authority threatened with his arrival and suffers. The suffering of the protagonists is very sad in life, but ideal for comedy.
-The characters, and especially Javier, are specialists in fleeing forward. You too?
-Fleeing forward is like moving backward, although it sounds very strange. I prefer to face problems head on and with encouragement. We already know that a timely withdrawal is a victory, but they also say that the world belongs to the brave.
-What similarities are there between the actor and the character?
-We share physically, to our disgrace, although I recognize that he may be the only character I have played in which I have included a personal little thing of mine.
-It’s not even a year since the first one was released and the second one is here. Are you already thinking about a third one?
-As you roll, you already find anecdotes and ideas for the next one, but it is the audience that is the definitive engine that really encourages you to continue a saga.
-A very recognizable sign of your movies are cameos. Do all those to whom it is proposed usually appear?
-Luckily, most are amused and delighted to accept.
-Speaking of Torrente, a few months ago I mentioned that with him in command the measures against the coronavirus would have been similar.
-Of course, I was joking. Specific issues, such as taking advantage of the pandemic to sell us defective or unapproved tests and masks, is something very torrentian.
