Valentino Rossi has mixed feelings after the San Marino Grand Prix. He was deprived of a 200th podium in MotoGP in front of his home crowd on the last lap, following a pass by Joan Mir. But the first two to arrive, Franco Morbidelli and Francesco Bagnaia, are members of the VR46 Riders Academy, in which the dean of MotoGP takes great pride.
“I am very, very, very happy on one side and unfortunately it’s a big disappointment for my podium, because here in Misano, with Franco and Pecco, it would have been incredible”, explains Rossi. “We weren’t expecting it. It’s a real shame because on the last lap Mir was able to overtake me. He arrived very quickly, he had a very good pace. It’s a shame.”
“But it’s still a good weekend and above all a very good race for me. I drove well, I was good from start to finish. Unfortunately, I suffered a bit with the front and with the ‘back. Franco was better than me. He was able to escape. It’s good to see Franco and Pecco first and second. It’s a shame for me but the performance remains good. “
The right tire choice
Valentino Rossi remains satisfied with Yamaha’s performance on a circuit favorable to the Japanese machine: “The Yamaha was very strong this weekend, because the track doesn’t have a lot of long straights, in which we are suffering a lot. The track is very bumpy but also very narrow in several corners. It offers grip. but it has a lot of bumps. Our bike is very stable. It seems that other manufacturers have had more difficulties. “
Maverick Viñales had a more difficult race, finished in sixth place. Rossi believes that the difference came from their choice of tires: “Maverick left with a tough [à l’avant]”, says the Italian. “I also wanted to start with the hard. The midrange presented a bigger risk. With 10 minutes left of the race, I spoke with my team and we took the medium. That’s what made the difference.
Rossi is finally delighted with the return of the public, with 10,000 people authorized to take their seats in the stands: “It was good to have supporters for the first time this season. Most of it was in yellow. I hope we can get back to normal life because it changes things a lot. Thanks for the support!”
