Could Alex Bregman Be Boston’s Next Big Acquisition?
The MLB Winter Meetings are heating up, and the Boston Red Sox are making headlines. With reports swirling about their interest in star third baseman Alex Bregman, could he be the missing piece for the Red Sox’s championship puzzle?
Bregman: A Proven Winner
ESPN analyst and former Astro skipper Alex Cora confirmed the Red Sox’s interest in Bregman, praising his all-around talent and championship pedigree.
"He’s a good player, man,” Cora told reporters. “He’s a complete player. It’s a player, he’s been on winning teams his whole career. Good defender. Offensively, he’s really good. He’s a guy that a lot of people are talking about. I do believe he can impact a big-league team, a championship-caliber team. He’s that type of player.”
Bregman’s impressive resume speaks for itself. The former No. 1 overall pick has been a key cog in the Houston Astros’ success, even playing a pivotal role against the Red Sox in postseason matchups.
Where Does Bregman Fit In?
With Rafael Devers solidified at third base, speculation arises about Bregman’s potential position if he joined the Red Sox. Cora hinted that Bregman possesses the versatility to play multiple positions, including second base, a position the Red Sox might need to address.
“[We had] that conversation in (2017) when I was with the Astros,” Cora recalled. “We made some adjustments at third base where he was playing. He was feeling uncomfortable. At the end, it paid off for him. He’s a Gold Glove defender at third. I always envisioned him playing in the middle of the diamond. Those were conversations in ’17. He can adjust. He has the baseball IQ to do that.”
A Winning Combination?
The potential acquisition of Bregman could be a game-changer for the Red Sox. His offensive firepower, defensive skill, and winning mentality would undoubtedly make an impact.
