Kosovar Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti announced on Sunday evening that he had tested positive for the new coronavirus and that he was going to self-quarantine for the next two weeks.
“Today I tested for Covid-19 and was found positive,” wrote Mr. Hoti, 44, on his Facebook account.
He said he had started a quarantine of two weeks during which he would continue to perform his duties, from his home. “I have no symptoms except a very slight cough,” he said.
A convinced center-right and Europhile professor of economics, Avdullah Hoti became Prime Minister in early June.
Like the rest of the Balkans, one of the poorest regions in Europe, with fragile medical infrastructure, Kosovo has experienced a significant increase in Covid-19 contaminations since June. This country of 1.8 million inhabitants has officially recorded some 9,000 contaminations, including 249 deaths.
