Teachers around the world face unprecedented challenges as they seek ways to ensure quality education for all students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the nature of these challenges varies by country or location, a common concern is with learners who are known to be vulnerable to marginalization or exclusion, such as those from the poorest households, refugees and those in conflict situations, ethnic and linguistic minorities and indigenous populations, as well as children with disabilities.

In addition, UNESCO estimates that girls aged 12 to 17 are particularly at risk of dropping out of school in low- and lower-middle-income countries, while boys are more at risk in lower-middle-income countries. upper middle and upper income.

It follows that efforts to ensure the transformation of education in light of the pandemic must be grounded in the principles of inclusion and equity. These principles are summarized in UNESCO’s Guide to Ensuring Inclusion and Equity in Education, as follows: “Every learner matters and matters equally”. This webinar specifically addresses what this means for teaching and learning practices.

This webinar will focus more specifically on the practice of teachers and how they can be supported to find ways to ensure that marginalized and vulnerable learners are included in schools, and to adapt content, pedagogies and learning. evaluation so that they are truly inclusive. Examples of promising innovations from different regions of the world will be presented and analyzed.

Providing a platform for the sharing of experiences between faculty and other stakeholders, the discussion will particularly focus on three questions:

  • What educational practices can ensure that all children and young people are included in schools when they reopen?
  • How can teachers be supported and empowered to develop these practices?
  • What are the challenges faced by teachers and school leaders and how can they be overcome?

The topic of the webinar relates to and builds on the Framework for School Reopening, which was developed by several agencies, including UNESCO, in April 2020, and other guidance material on School Reopening.

The event is organized by UNESCO, the UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE) and the University of Manchester, and targets academic staff, teacher trainers, policy makers, curriculum developers and educational advisers, as well as other key stakeholders.
