Portage IN: Officers Deliver Baby Boy in Parking Lot

by Archynetys Health Desk

Officers with the Portage Department of Public Safety answered an unusual — but not unheard of — call Monday night.

A caller reported around 8 p.m. they heard a woman yelling in a parking lot off of Austrian Pine Way near Romence Road, police said.

When officers arrived, they found that she was in the process of giving birth and were able to help during the final stages of delivery.

While keeping mom, dad, and their two-year-old child calm, the department said responders helped welcome a baby boy into the world.

Both the mother and her baby were then taken to the hospital where police said they are doing well.

“The exciting thing about being an officer with the Portage Department of Public Safety is that you truly never know what the day (or night) will bring,” the department wrote on social media. “While officers receive brief training on emergency childbirth at the police academy, most will never actually have to use it.”
