Thousands of births were registered in Dresden last year. Two names top the hit list.
Emil and Charlotte were the most popular first names for newborns in Dresden in 2025. The city announced this, citing the current annual statistics from the registry office.
For the boys, Emil leads the rankings for the tenth time in a row. The name has been given 49 times. Noah follows with 37 and Theo with 36 awards. For the first time, Charlotte was at the top among the girls with 37 entries. Emma took second place with 32 awards and was still the leader last year. Alma and Mathilda shared third place with 30 awards each.
The registry office recorded 5,947 births – 3,056 boys and 2,887 girls. The gender of four children remained undetermined. The number of births was slightly higher than the previous year’s figure of 5,877, but remains at a low level.
Among the newborns there were 93 sets of twins and two triplet births. In addition, 81 children born abroad were subsequently registered.
49 percent of the mothers were not married. The proportion of parents with foreign nationality was 21.2 percent from 124 different countries. Most came from Syria (300), Ukraine (188) and India (142), according to the registry office.
The registry office recorded a decline in marriages to 1,817 couples, including 65 of the same sex. Last year, 1,984 couples got married. May was the most popular month with 256 weddings, January was the weakest with only 35. Deaths rose to 6,902 (2024: 6,717) – including 3,569 men and 3,332 women.
