Police killed a dog that ran amok and maimed two people on a residential street.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers rushed to Morley Street in Rochdale at around 9.30pm last night as the out of control animal attacked members of the public.

The force said two people were bitten by the dog – their injuries were not believed to be serious.

He added that due to the number of people in the area and the “aggressive manner” of the dogs, officers were forced to shoot him “for safety reasons”.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said today: ‘At approximately 9.30pm last night (Friday August 6th) police were called to a report of a dog on the loose in Morley Street, Rochdale.

“Officers attended the scene and found that two members of the public had been bitten by the aggressively acting dog.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the incident, the dog was humanely destroyed as a safety measure due to the number of people in the area and the injuries caused.

‘Investigations are ongoing. No serious injuries were reported.

The incident happened in the same town where a three-year-old boy was mauled to death by a dog just a few months ago.

Daniel Twigg was shot dead by a dog while playing outside a house in Milnrow, less than four miles from the incident, on May 15 this year.
