Pianist Maria Joao Pires, again injured, cancels recital in London

Maria João Pires, 78, was to perform this Thursday, September 29 at Wigmore Hall in London, to perform works by Schubert and Debussy. An injury, the nature and gravity of which we do not know, forced her to give up this recital.

Maria João Pires played without any sign of weakness on September 20 at the Philharmonie de Paris

The Wigmore Hall in London was proud to present to its public this Thursday a recital of Maria João Pires during which she should have interpreted the Piano Sonatas D664 and D960 by Franz Schubert, the Suite bergamasque and the Two arabesques by Claude Debussy. Unfortunately, the officials of the London institution were forced to cancel this performance due to an injury suffered by the Portuguese pianist.

« Due to an injury, Maria Joao Pires withdrew from the scheduled concert. The recital is therefore canceled and will not be replaced.. It is by this laconic message published on its site that the Wigmore Hall announced this defection, without any mention of the nature and the gravity of this injury. Last week, however, on September 20, the Portuguese pianist performed the Concerto pour piano n°3 by Ludwig van Beethoven alongside the young musicians of the Brazilian orchestra Neojuba at the Philharmonie de Paris without showing the slightest difficulty in playing.

Maria João Pires scheduled for early October in Amsterdam, Madrid and Monaco

We remember that a little over a year ago, on September 5, 2021, Maria Joao Pires seriously injured her shoulder following a fall in Riga. She was replaced for the recital she was to give there, a few months after her return to the stage following a long break of 3 years. The Portuguese pianist performed in November in Lyon before resuming, sparingly, a series of concerts scheduled in Europe and in particular at the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence last April. His next concerts scheduled for October 2 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, October 4 at the National Auditorium in Madrid and October 6 in Monaco are still announced on the websites of the institutions concerned.
