Philippines Weather Alert: Shear Line and Amihan Bring Rain and Strong Winds
MANILA – Residents throughout the Philippines are advised to brace for ongoing weather disturbances. The shear line combined with the northeast monsoon or “amihan” will bring widespread rain to Luzon, while the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will affect parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
Shear Line Impacting Southern Luzon
The Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the shear line, created by the collision of warm and cool air masses, will affect southern Luzon. Expect cloudy skies, scattered rains, and localized thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall in the Bicol Region, Quezon, and Aurora.
PAGASAwarns of potential localized flooding, especially in urbanized areas, low-lying regions, and near rivers. Additionally, landslides are possible in highly susceptible areas.
Amihan Affects Metro Manila and Other Luzon Regions
Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa will experience cloudy skies with rain due to the amihan.
ITCZ Causes Rain in Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Palawan
Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Palawan will also face cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
Partly Cloudy to Cloudy Skies Across the Country
Other regions around Luzon will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains. In the rest of the country, expect partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Strong Winds and Rough Seas Advised
PAGASA issued warnings for strong to gale-force winds in Northern Luzon, Central Luzon, and eastern parts of Southern Luzon and the Visayas. Rough to very rough seas and wave heights of 3.1 to 5.0 meters are anticipated.
For the rest of Luzon and Visayas, anticipate moderate to strong winds that may cause moderate to rough seas. Mindanao will experience light to moderate winds and slight to moderate coastal waters.
Essential Precautions
As the weather conditions intensify, residents are urged to stay informed through official updates from PAGASA and local government units. Stay indoors during rainstorms and avoid rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas to minimize flood risks. Use proper safety measures when driving in wet and slippery conditions.
Stay Informed and Stay Safe
The Philippines Meteorological Office will continue to monitor weather patterns and provide timely updates. Residents are advised to listen to weather bulletins and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety.
