Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant Top Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials

LIVERPOOL, N.S. — Mixed doubles curling trials have seen dramatic performances and intense competition, with Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant staying undefeated at the forefront. The husband-and-wife duo from Calgary secured a playoff spot, sitting at the top of Pool B with just one game remaining.

Husband-and-Wife Team Dominates

The Peterman-Gallant team has shown remarkable form throughout the week.

“I think at the start of the week you really kind of want to be in that game to potentially get into the 1-2 game,”

said Gallant. “So we’re where we want to be. The good news is we’re playing well too. We feel more comfortable with the ice and how we’re throwing it as the week’s gone along, and that’s the important thing.”

Towards Olympic Qualification

The winner of these trials could represent Canada in the 2026 Olympic Games, contingent upon also performing well at the 2025 world championship to secure Canada’s Olympic qualification. The Olympic field consists of the top eight ranked countries globally, or the top seven plus host Italy if they aren’t in the top eight. Currently, Canada sits in fifth place.

Trial Format and Points

The 16-team field is divided into two pools, with the top three teams advancing to the playoff stage starting Thursday evening. The final match takes place on Saturday at the Queens Place Emera Centre.

Recent victories

Peterman and Gallant had convincing wins on Wednesday. They defeated Jim and Jaelyn Cotter 8-1 and Tyrel Griffith and Jennifer Armstrong 5-2. Their next opponent in Pool B was 2024 Canadian champions Colton and Kadriana Lott, who they faced with a 4-2 record.

Other Pool B Performances

The Lotts emerged victorious over Lisa Weagle and John Epping 8-6 and a 4-2 score against Epping and Weagle. The Cotters and Griffith-Armstrong were locked in a 3-3 standoff.

Pool A Developments

In Pool A, Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher had a stumble, losing 7-6 to Brittany Tran and Rylan Kleiter. However, they secured playoff berths with wins in the evening draw. Homan and Bottcher beat Nancy Martin and Steve Laycock 8-3, and Tran and Kleiter vanquished Robert Desjardins and Anne-Sophie Gionest 8-6.

Other notable victories included Jessica Zheng and Victor Pietrangelo taking down Paige Papley and Evan Van Amsterdam 6-5 and Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing delivering a decisive 9-3 loss to Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres.
