India had air strikes carried out on Pakistani territory for the first time in several years: In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, the Indian military attacked several locations in Pakistan in a name “Operation Sindoor” – according to official information, it should be “terrorist infrastructure”.
Pakistan announced a reaction to the attack – it is still unclear when it will take place and what it should look like. “This hideous provocation will not remain unanswered,” the Pakistani military spokesman Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry announced to the Pakistanian television station Geo News an.
The air strikes are a massive escalation of the situation between the two neighboring countries: The situation has been on the basis of control for days after several Islamist terrorists had carried out a attack on Indian tourists in the city of Pahangam in the Kaschmir crisis region, in which 26 people died.
According to the first, still unconfirmed, three destinations were controlled in the first air strikes, including a basis of the Pakistani air forces. A mosque that belongs to an Islamist organization is said to have been hit by an air strike. At least three first attacks are also confirmed from Pakistani side; India speaks of a total of nine locations that are said to have been attacked by Indian air strikes.
The fact that the Pakistani military would also have been attacked has so far been denied from the Indian side. In a statement on the attacks, it says: “Our measures were targeted, moderate and not escalating. No Pakistani military facilities were attacked. India was very reserved in the selection of the goals and the implementation methods.”
