Conceived as a summer school that has the purpose of reflecting and discussing the ethics of the past, present and future, as well as seeking to rethink the relationship between art and technology, the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), in collaboration with the Casa del Lago of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Max Aub and Olivier Debroise Extraordinary Chairs, will carry out the third edition of the Open Matter Meeting, which returns to face-to-face mode and is open to the general public.
The program is made up of a series of public conferences that have the purpose of questioning the political, economic and ideological forces that condition the current cultural production and seeks to open reflections on the cultural productions that exist in marginalized social strata and located on the peripheries of the Mexico City.
This edition of the Open Matter Encounter, entitled “La Rebelión del Coyote”, has the curatorial work of Colombian researcher Sara Garzón, who highlighted the importance of carrying out pedagogical projects outside institutions or schools. “It is very interesting to conceive a program that thinks about pedagogy from outside conventional educational structures, we are questioning museums and places of knowledge that are public and we add community educational places that propose new methodologies to education”, she commented in an interview.
Likewise, part of the objectives of this edition is to address the pedagogical problems that are in force, which, according to Sara Garzón, limit the possibilities of learning and dissemination and production of culture. “I have considered within my curatorial and academic process the way to open up the possibilities of education outside of structures that are even dangerous, violent, exclusive.”
For her part, the director of Casa del Lago, Cinthya García Leyva, welcomed the fact that the edition is held in person, which speaks of the need to think of education as an active entity and that it needs to question itself in order to face the new post-pandemic reality. “It is relevant for the adaptation exercise that we are experiencing due to the pandemic that Open Matter returns to the National University, which is weaving links with other social spaces.”
The conferences will be held until August 27 at the Casa del Lago auditorium and at the MUAC, and will include the participation of international artists and speakers.
The complete program and schedules can be found on the MUAC and Casa del Lago networks.
