On-site workshop on the cultivation of lanvandín in Molina de Aragón | NewAlcarria

It is based on an agrarian stewardship program that promotes the replacement of cereal cultivation with ecological lavandin to benefit steppe birds such as the ricoti lark (Chersophilus duponti), a species threatened by changes in land use, livestock abandonment, and by the loss of natural habitats that are conducive to it.

For this, an ecological pilot culture of lavandin (Lavandula x hybrida) has been developed in 11 ha. in Cillas and a series of good agricultural management practices that go beyond the ecological have been tested.

This PAB tries to verify on a plot scale how new types of crops help the conservation of certain endangered bird species and also enhance the development of the surrounding rural areas by innovating and betting on the conservation of their environment, generating an essence of lavandin produced within the Red Natura 2000 area and that as a product acquires a differentiation with respect to other essences from the rest of the world by helping with its cultivation in a sustainable way, to the conservation of steppe bird species.

In addition, through this Plan, the viability of certain pro-biodiversity practices has been tested, such as, for example, the management of weed plants by cattle, fertilization using the fertilizer dispersed by sheep, the removal of weed plants the first year by hand or pollinator encouragement. Indirectly through this new type of cultivation in the area, new business opportunities are created, the economy is diversified, several products are obtained with infinite possibilities in the market and attractive landscapes are created for tourism.

In order to demonstrate the results of the different agricultural practices used, birds, invertebrates and agriculture have been monitored, which provide interesting data in this regard and which will be published during the workshop on July 3, 2021.

The Global Nature Foundation executes this project together with Biodiversity Node and the Territorial Services of the Community Board of Castilla-La Mancha in Guadalajara financed by Naturgy and Endesa
