Olivier Higgins: Crafting connection Through Cinema

From Bicycle Journeys to Cinematic Immersion

Olivier Higgins, a Quebecois filmmaker, discovered the profound impact of visual storytelling while cycling 8,000 kilometers from Mongolia to India wiht his creative and life partner, Mélanie carrier. This journey became the foundation for their first film, Asiamut, and subsequently, their production company, Mö films.

Mö Films: A Legacy of Human-Centered Narratives

As the success of Asiamut, Mö films has produced a series of works, each serving as a catalyst for encountering diverse individuals and immersing audiences in their daily lives. Higgins and Carrier’s films are known for their humanistic perspective, revealing the inherent poetry within everyday stories. Their approach aligns with the growing trend of documentary filmmaking that prioritizes empathy and understanding, as highlighted in recent reports by the Documentary Filmmakers Alliance.

“Wandering Without Return”: A Story of refuge and Resilience

One particularly impactful encounter was with Mohammed Shofi, the protagonist of their 2020 film, Wandering Without return. Shofi’s experiences deeply inspired Higgins and Carrier, leading them to create an immersive exhibition titled Find Refuge, presented at the Museum of Civilization in Quebec. This exhibition allows visitors to trace Mohammed’s journey from the Kutalong refugee camps in Bangladesh, where he spent his childhood, to his arrival in the snow-covered landscapes of Quebec at the age of 18.

The exhibition Find Refuge offers a powerful and intimate look at the refugee experience, highlighting the resilience and strength of individuals forced to leave their homes.
