On October 11, 2025, Orthodox Christians celebrate Parents’ Saturday of the Intercession – a special day of remembrance of deceased parents, relatives and loved ones. This date annually precedes the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which traditionally falls on October 14.
As the clergy explain, parental Saturday is established on the closest Saturday before the holiday, so in 2025 it falls on October 11. On this day, memorial services and litias are held in all churches – special services at which believers pray for the souls of the dead.
Historical roots of the tradition

The history of Intercession Parental Saturday dates back to the 16th century and is associated with one of the most important events in Russian history – the capture of Kazan by the troops of Ivan the Terrible in 1552. After the victory, the priests made a religious procession through the streets of the city, and on the site of the Khan’s headquarters, a wooden church was erected, which was later replaced by the Annunciation Cathedral.
Despite the significance of the event, the memory of the fallen soldiers remained unmarked for a long time. Only several decades later, Metropolitan Hermogenes suggested that Patriarch Job establish a special day of remembrance for all those killed in the battle. The initiative was approved – since then, the service in memory of the Kazan soldiers was held annually on the first Saturday after Intercession, when hostilities ended.
Gradually, the custom spread beyond the Kazan diocese and became an important part of the Orthodox tradition. Today, Intercession Parents’ Saturday is celebrated in many regions of Russia – in Tatarstan, Kirov region, Udmurtia, the Urals and Central Russia.
Holiday traditions
The main meaning of this day is memory, gratitude and prayer. Believers visit the temple, submit notes of remembrance for the dead, light candles, and bring food for consecration to then distribute to those in need.
It is also customary to visit cemeteries, tidy up graves, and light candles and flowers. But, as the priests note, the most important thing is prayer, and not external actions.
Funeral meals are held in the family circle, without excessive fun and alcohol. This day is not a time of mourning, but an opportunity to remember loved ones with warmth and love.
