LRin Winkler: “With the Oberwart educational campus, we are sending a strong signal for equal opportunities and modern pedagogy in southern Burgenland.”
The new Oberwart educational campus was ceremoniously opened in Oberwart. State Councilor for Education Daniela Winkler and State Councilor Heinrich Dorner, Director of Education Alfred Lehner as well as Mayor Georg Rosner and Deputy Mayor Michael Leitgeb took part in the event. The celebration was accompanied by musical performances by a total of 71 children from the Oberwart elementary school and central music school. The state education councilor described the opening as “an important step for the future of the children and for the entire region”. She emphasized: “This campus is more than a school building. It is a place for encounters, togetherness and modern learning. Here we create the best conditions so that every child can develop their talents.”

With construction costs of around 38 million euros, the Oberwart educational campus is the largest investment in the history of the Oberwart municipality. The project was implemented by Projektentwicklung Burgenland GmbH (PEB) for the municipality and represents a joint financing project between the state of Burgenland and the city of Oberwart. The building, planned by the renowned architectural firm “Franz and Sue ZT GmbH”, combines the most modern structural, educational and ecological standards. The campus covers a usable area of around 9,000 square meters and offers space for a 24-class elementary school with all-day care, a central music school, the rehearsal rooms of the city band as well as additional creative rooms, a library and gymnasiums.
Learning rooms based on the most modern concept
The new Oberwart elementary school is currently attended by 330 students. The classes are divided into six pedagogical clusters, each of which includes three classrooms, two differentiation rooms, a learning team room for educators and a central marketplace as a communication and meeting zone. This open structure optimally supports joint learning, exchange and individual support. At the heart of the building is a spacious atrium that serves as a central lounge and event room. Bright rooms, natural materials and energy-efficient construction characterize the architecture of the house.
Outdoor areas for exercise, meetings and relaxation
The educational campus includes a spacious outdoor area covering around 4 hectares, which offers a variety of leisure and sports opportunities. Three multi-purpose sports fields, a fun court, beach volleyball and badminton areas as well as a central park with learning islands and play equipment create ideal conditions for exercise and learning together outdoors. The existing soccer field is also available for school activities.
A place of togetherness
In addition to the elementary school, the Oberwart Central Music School and the Oberwart City Band will also find their home in the new campus. This will create a lively educational and cultural center that will have a lasting impact on the city of Oberwart. “With the Oberwart educational campus, we are creating an environment in which education, culture and community go hand in hand. This is our investment in the future of our children – and in the future of Burgenland,” concluded State Education Councilor Daniela Winkler.
