The North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal was postponed after the Premier League accepted a request from the impoverished Gunner squad.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Friday that the Gunners had applied for the quash with arch rivals Tottenham to be canceled.

They have at least a dozen players unavailable due to positive Covid cases, injuries, disqualification and international duty at the African Cup of Nations.

And the Premier League accepted Arsenal’s request on Saturday, with the result that Spurs could be furious.

The rules state that clubs are required to complete Premier League matches provided they have 13 field players and a goalkeeper who are part of the senior or “Under 21 suitably experienced” team.

But Mikel Arteta’s squad is so impoverished that they haven’t even managed to muster that number of players for one of their biggest games of the season.

Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Elneny and Nicolas Pepe are away to Cameroon for the ongoing AFCON competition.

Granit Xhaka is suspended after receiving a red card against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday night.

Martin Odegaard is the only Covid case known to the club, but Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares, Kieran Tierney, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka are all doubtful about the injuries.

The amount of doubt about the injury has raised suspicions at Tottenham and it has not gone unnoticed that Arsenal have left Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Folarin Balogun on loan in recent days.

Arsenal Under 23s were also in action on Friday night, drawing 1-1 with West Ham, with a potential argument that some of those players could have been called into the senior squad by Arteta.

It is the second Premier League game to fall by the wayside this weekend following the postponement of Saturday’s match between Burnley and Leicester City.
