After a six-year stop, direct flights between China and North Korea are returning: Air China has restored air connections between Beijing and Pyongyang, marking a significant step in the reopening of relations between the two countries.
The resumption of flights comes a few days after the reactivation of the railway connection between the two capitals, which had also been suspended for about six years. A double signal that confirms a gradual return to normality in connections between China and North Korea.
The reopening of air and rail routes highlights the strengthening of bilateral relations. In fact, Beijing represents Pyongyang’s main trading partner, as well as being a fundamental ally from a diplomatic and political point of view.
Travel between the two countries had been drastically reduced in 2020, when North Korea imposed severe border restrictions to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. For years, these measures have isolated the country, limiting both trade and tourist flows.
