The Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s basketball team has commenced fall practices, marking the official start of preparations for the upcoming season. With their first exhibition game against north dakota State slated for October 16th, Head Coach Niko Medved is focused on fine-tuning the team’s strategies and building cohesion before the regular season tips off in early November.

Coach Medved recently addressed the media, offering insights into several key aspects of the team’s progress and outlook for the year.

Team Chemistry and Culture

Medved emphasized the positive team dynamic, stating, “I genuinely appreciate them as individuals. Their approach thus far has been outstanding. I believe this group will continue to improve as of it.” He highlighted the team’s unselfish play during the summer, expressing optimism about the cultural foundation being established.

Offensive Strategy

Discussing the offensive approach, Medved explained, “Spacing and ball movement will be key. We aim to be a team where players are constantly in motion off the ball.” he stressed the importance of maintaining this dynamic even as the intensity and fatigue of the season increase.

Versatility and Team identity

Medved hopes to cultivate versatility, particularly on the wings, along with toughness and strong dialog. He acknowledged the importance of understanding individual strengths and weaknesses to maximize team performance. While the Gophers will primarily play man-to-man defense, Medved indicated they would incorporate some zone schemes as well.

Physicality in the Big Ten

Recognizing the demanding nature of the Big Ten Conference, Medved stressed the need for remarkable physicality. “We have to play incredibly physically…it is the most physical league in the country.”

Addressing Size Disadvantage

Acknowledging that the Gophers might be undersized at times, Medved expressed confidence in the team’s toughness and determination. “We’re a little bit undersized, but I think we got some tough guys…We gotta find a way to mitigate that and find what our strengths are and leverage those.”

Asuma’s Potential

Medved spoke highly of Asuma, praising his talent and character. “he’s a really talented young man,but he’s just an exceptional dude…He just needs to continue to get better and kind of find that fire in him and that confidence that he can really be a guy.”

Crocker-Johnson’s Notable Progress

Medved lauded the progress of Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, stating, “That young man has had as good of a summer and fall as I could’ve expected. He has just been awesome in every way…He’s just a warrior on both ends of the floor. He’s a terrific defensive player. He’s really physical. He’s shooting the ball well from three. Finds ways to score, especially against smaller guys.”

Recruiting Update

Medved indicated the possibility of adding one more player to the roster. “Possibility for one more. Potentially. It’s gotta be the right guy…We’ve got some guys that have visited that we really, really like, so we’ll see where that goes. After that, we’re pretty happy with the class that we have.” The Gophers currently have three high school commits.

Team Health

Medved reported that the team is currently the healthiest it has been as he took over as head coach. B.J.Omot has been cleared to play, and Rob Vaihola has been practicing fully for approximately three weeks. Guard Chance Stephens is dealing with an illness, and fifth-year transfer Max Gizzy is recovering from a broken foot and is expected to be cleared to play in about six weeks.
