For nearly five years, he has been the closest collaborator of the Primate des Gaules, one of those who lived from inside the scandal of pedophilia that rocked the Lyon church, the cardinal in the lead. This Tuesday, after announcing that his resignation was refused by the Pope, the Archbishop of Lyon
Philippe Barbarin announced his withdrawal from the diocese "for some time".
To succeed him in the day-to-day management of the Lyon church, he decided to call on Father Yves Baumgarten, vicar general moderator. But who is the right arm of the primate of Gaul?

Public Treasury employee
Father Yves Baumgarten has an atypical career. The 54-year-old Lyonnais was ordained a priest at the age of 40 after entering a completely different career at the end of his master's degree in economics. For eight years, he was a tax collector before joining, in 1997, the Saint-Irénee seminary in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon and being ordained priest in June 2014 by Philippe Barbarin himself.

He then worked in several parishes of the Loire, as vicar, then as parish priest, before being appointed territorial episcopal vicar in Lyon. He is then in charge of assisting the bishop on this specific territory and also serves as parish priest at the parish of Sacré-Coeur, in the district of Part-Dieu. Then, in 2014, Cardinal Barbarin asked him to become general vicar moderator, which he accepted.
Alongside the cardinal in turmoil
"This mission requires listening to his cardinal and his wish for the diocese, and [d’être] listening to the different actors ", he explained the year of his taking office. The role of the vicar general moderator "is to ensure that everyone in the diocese can live its mission well, have what it takes to accomplish it, in terms of training, spiritual comfort, trust," he added , without knowing then that, two years later, the Lyons church and the cardinal would experience an unprecedented turmoil.
From Tuesday, the clergyman is entrusted with the keys of the Church of Lyon temporarily to ensure the management of current affairs. An essential mission, but that promises to be complicated in a diocese "suffering for three years", as recalled Tuesday the Primate of Gaul in his statement.
