Illinois approves a steady increase in the minimum wage

The democratic governor J.B. Pritzker called today "a victory for the working families "the staggered increase in the minimum wage in Illinois to $ 15 per hour approved by the Senate, which has a majority of his party.

The increase will be spread over six years and its confirmation will be taken for granted in the House of Representatives, because of the Democratic majority that exists in the Legislative Assembly in a state that historically has a large Latin American population.

The proposal starts with the current base of $ 8.25 per hour, next year will increase $ 1.75 and one dollar per month every first January, until the year 2025.

"This is a great victory for the working families of the state," said Pritzker, who had promised the increase during his campaign.

The governor added that "everyone deserves to receive the same payment as workers in Chicago", the city where the first of July is raised to $ 13 per hour, in a gradual increase that points to $ 15 in another two years .

The minimum wage in Cook County, where Chicago is located, will rise from $ 11 to $ 12 per hour on July 1st.

According to Pritzker, the increase is supported by the Restaurant Association, one of the largest employers in the state.

Todd Maisch, president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, said, however, that the $ 15 per hour means an increase of 82 percent in the minimum wage in the coming years.

"This will hurt small businesses, eliminate jobs and opportunities for employees who need them the most," Maisch said in a statement.

The bill proposes a tax reduction that allows employers with 50 or less full-time employees to compensate part of the costs of raising wages.
