The 2020 presidential election will be there before we know it, and voting laws can be complicated: they vary from state to state and are sometimes seemingly designed to be confusing. Moreover, the deadlines for the first elections will be here before we know it. So what is a better time than now to take advantage of your state's dating rules and regulations?

The general elections take place on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, but the primary elections and state caucuses take place on different dates, some of which are confirmed and some of them be estimated based on caucus and primary data in the past. Vote.org maintains an up-to-date list of voice registration requirements. If you want to participate in the caucus of your state, you must register in advance. The election council of your state or the website of the state secretary has more information about this.

There are three ways to register to vote: personally, by post or online. All states allow registration by mail and in person. Not all states allow online registration, and only a handful can be registered personally on election day.

If you live in a state where personal registration is permitted on election day, ensure that you have a valid proof of identity and proof of residency at your registration location. Also keep in mind that most states require that you are a resident at least 30 days before voting. So if you are a recent transplant, you may be out of luck.

If you intend to vote by correspondence, the rules may differ, so you must check your state's election website.
