Grossrazzia against alleged Gülen supporters | TIME ONLINE

The Turkish government is again targeting hundreds of alleged members of the Gülen movement. The Prosecutor General's Office in the Turkish capital Ankara ordered the arrest of a total of 1,112 suspects in connection with the attempted coup two and a half years ago. According to the state news agency Anadolu, police operations are planned in 76 provinces. The focus of the nationwide raids is the capital Ankara.

The police regularly conduct raids against alleged Gülen supporters. Last week alone, more than 370 suspected supporters of the movement were arrested, according to Anadolu.

So far, more than 77,000 people have been arrested in connection with the coup attempt. 150,000 civil servants and military personnel were suspended or released.

Fraud allegations for police examinations

The Turkish leadership claims the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen was the actual person responsible for the failed coup of July 2016. Gülen rejects the allegations. He lives in the US and Turkey demands his extradition. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had recently said that the fight against the Gülen movement was far from over. Fethullah Gülen and Erdoğan have long been allies. A dispute over power issues became public in 2013, since then, the two are enemies.

According to Anadolu, those who are currently being sought should have cheated on the police commissioner's exam in 2010. Accordingly, they would have received the exam questions before. Experts believe that the Gülen movement has provided a large number of exam questions for the police or officer careers to give their supporters a position in the senior civil service. Thus, the movement managed to infiltrate the Turkish state.

The background to the coup attempt of 2016 has not yet been clarified. president Erdoğan Since then, however, it has allowed government-critical politicians, journalists and, in general, critical sections of civil society to be prosecuted.
