Gov. Scott: While families remember Irma and prepare for Florence, Florida offers support

As Hurricane Florence grows and threatens the southeastern American coast, Rick Scott spoke in Florida Gov. Nathan Deal, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to offer resources and help.

Florence has been strengthened this afternoon into a category 4 hurricane and is expected to affect the southeastern US coast later this week.

Although it is predicted that Florida will not experience major consequences from Florence, Scott encourages Floridians to remain vigilant and prepare.

According to the current weather forecast from the National Weather Service, the main impact for Florence on Florida will be extremely dangerous surfing conditions, including life-threatening power surges along the east coast.

"Today, on the one-year jubilee of the destructive landing of Hurricane Irma in the Florida Keys, we are reminded of how horrendous the consequences of a storm like Florence can be, in anticipation of the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence to our neighboring countries, I offer all available funds from Florida to prepare, respond to and recover from Hurricane Florence.

"Today I called and talked to the governors of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia to let them know that I proactively announced weight requirements for emergency response and response resources and placed our national guard and high-water response assets at the standard level. to put and help where necessary.

"In Florida, we are fortunate that the world's best emergency management professionals are available to provide their expertise and guidance.Although our state is not predicting a major impact from Hurricane Florence at the moment, families must remain vigilant Because we know that these situations can change at any time, we will continue to follow this storm and do everything possible to keep families in Florida and our neighboring countries safe, "Scott said.

Help preparing Florida for other states includes:
• Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) law enforcement officials are on stand-by to deploy high-water vehicles in affected areas;
• the Florida National Guard is on stand-by to provide assistance to affected areas;
• The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has coordinated with the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to allow emergency feed and rescue vehicles to bypass all FDOT weighing stations until September 17, 2018.

Last year, after Hurricane Harvey, Florida deployed 129 FWC officers and support staff in Texas, along with 62 ships and other specialized equipment, to conduct search and rescue missions.

FWC officers were helpful in rescuing more than 1,000 people affected by the devastating flooding around Houston.

In addition, nearly 270 Florida volunteers deployed in Texas and Louisiana last year and Volunteer Florida coordinated the activities of ten disaster relief organizations in the area.
