So Many breweries such as today were present in Germany at least since the reunification: with 1539 companies, the Federal Bureau of Statistics registered another increase last year. 39 were added, the majority were 14 in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Germans, however, drink less and less beer.
According to the latest available figures from the German press agency, the number of national breweries grew by 2.6 percent in 2018 not as strong as last year. The trend is still, however: especially in the big cities small specialty breweries are being created that offer aromatic craft beer. Meanwhile, the German beer market is dominated by large companies.
Bavaria is still the federal state with the most breweries. Last year it was 654, which was 9 more than last year. Baden-Württemberg (206) is in second place, NRW third (155). In the northeast of Germany there are the least breweries. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has only 22, one less than last year.
On average 94 liters of beer per inhabitant were sold in Germany; For the first time in a long time, the heat of the summer of summer 2018 had made the Germans a bit thirsty for beer. But that was still 13 liters less than ten years earlier – excluding non-alcoholic beer. In Bavaria the bulk of the beer was sold nationally, just under 25 million hectoliters.
