2 media groups win the Grand Slam award in the APSE competition

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two media groups have the 'Grand Slam & # 39; won in the annual editorial and sectional competition of the Associated Press Sports Editors held this week.

The New York Times, which participated in the A-division (a circulation of more than 88,000) earned the top-10 recognition for daily, Sunday and special sections to award a top-10 website prize (more than 2 million unique monthly visitors). The lawyer (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) received a Grand Slam award in category B (30,000-88,000 circulation and 750,000-2,000,000 monthly visitors).

The APSE awards, voted by sports editors from all over the country, honor work published in 2018.

Ten organizations won triple crowns and represented the top 10 awards in three of the four sections / website categories. These include:

– Category A: Los Angeles Times; The Boston Globe; The Seattle Times; The Washington Post.

– Category B: IndyStar (Indianapolis); The Oklahoman (Oklahoma City); The Salt Lake Tribune.

– Category C: The Scranton Times-Tribune.

– Category D: Marietta Daily Journal; The Tuscaloosa News.

The Columbia Missourian has won 11 video & # 39; s / awards. The Washington Post and The Tuscaloosa News have won nine. The Boston Globe and ESPN.com won eight.

In the C Division, Mike DeFabo of the Anderson Herald Bulletin and Nathan Baird of the Journal & Courier (Lafayette, Indiana) each won a top 10 award in six categories – column writing, game story, explanatory story, feature, breaking news story and reports. Andrew John from the Desert Sun (Palm Springs, California) placed in five categories.

Pete Thamel from Yahoo Sports led the A-division with three top 10 awards. Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press Gazette and the Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer led the B-division with three top-10 places each. And Joel Reichenberger from the Steamboat Pilot & Today (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) led the D Division with five top-10 places.

Winners will receive their prizes in June during the APSE Summer Convention in Atlanta.
