Gov. Hochul Orders Fires of 14 Prison Staff After Inmate Death

New York, NY – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has taken swift action following the fatal beating of an inmate at the Marcy Correctional Facility, ordering the termination of 14 prison staff members involved in the incident.

The deceased, 43-year-old Robert Brooks, was pronounced dead at a Utica hospital on December 10th, a day after an altercation with officers at the Oneida County prison.

Internal Review Leads to Accountability

Governor Hochul’s decision stems from an internal review conducted by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). While specifics surrounding the incident remain under investigation, Hochul emphasized in a statement, "We have no tolerance for individuals who cross the line, break the law and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse."

The DOCCS has suspended 13 employees, including correctional officers, sergeants, and a nurse, without pay. Additionally, one correctional officer has resigned.

Union Silent, Family Grieves

The labor union representing correctional officers has yet to comment on the incident.

Robert Brooks’ family expressed shock and sadness in a statement released through their lawyer to The Times-Union in Albany, saying, “No one should have to lose a family member this way.” They also commended Governor Hochul’s swift action in seeking accountability.

Independent Investigation Launched

New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced that her office is conducting an independent investigation into the use of force by correction officers leading to Brooks’ death.

Videos of the incident have been obtained and will be released to the public once Brooks’ family has had the opportunity to view them. Attorney General James stressed the importance of transparency and holding law enforcement professionals accountable.

Call for Justice and Reform

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for reform within correctional facilities. It highlights the importance of accountability, rigorous training for correctional officers, and improved oversight mechanisms to prevent such tragedies.

We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, ensuring justice is served for Robert Brooks and his family. Let this be a turning point towards creating a safer and more humane prison system for all.
