RB Leipzig can see itself as an early winner in the tug of war for Dayot Upamecano. Because the Saxons insist on the around 60 million euro exit clause, the central defender remains on board. The 21-year-old is also extending his contract, which will expire next season, by two years until 2023.
Sports director Markus Krösche says: “We are of course very happy to have extended the contract with Dayot Upamecano early. Dayot has matured to one of the top international defenders at RB Leipzig in the past few years and of course still has great development potential at only 21 years of age. All the better that he will continue to develop this potential with us. With this personnel decision, we can bind one of our central players to us, who is an identification figure for our club and perfectly embodies our game philosophy. “
“I feel extremely comfortable at RB Leipzig because the overall package fits. We had very good discussions with Oliver Mintzlaff, Markus Krösche and Julian Nagelsmann, who showed me that extending my contract is the right decision. ”Upamecano comments “We have a young and hungry team in an incredibly ambitious club and I want to tackle the next stages and goals with RB Leipzig because I am convinced of our way and our way of playing football.”
Change only postponed?
Upamecano would have loved to take the step to becoming an absolute top club this summer. The Frenchman was after FC Bayern FT-Information as far as possible. However, the Munich team showed no willingness to put 60 million on the table and instead signed Tanguy Nianzou (18) free of charge from Paris St. Germain.
Because the people of Leipzig have already made it clear that Upamecano should never be pulled free of charge, poker should start again in about a year. According to the ‘Bild’, the new exit clause is up to 50 million euros.
