New bridge opened after Genoa motorway collapse | Abroad

The new structure, the San Giorgio Bridge, was designed by star architect Renzo Piano, who is from Genoa. Prime Minister Conte sees the opening and rapid rebuilding as a symbol of a ‘new’ Italy, which is, among other things, burdened by the consequences of the corona crisis. The opening ceremony started with the names of the victims, followed by a minute of silence.

The new bridge restores the connection of the city with the airport and ports. An important route to France runs over the viaduct. Traffic can start using the bridge later this week.

It is still unclear why the 1967 Morandi Bridge collapsed on August 14, 2018. Justice investigates whether poor maintenance has been carried out. The bridge’s demise led to political and financial disputes.
