German magazine AutoBild has been running one of the toughest and most respected long-term tests in Europe for many years. The Audi is followed by the Mercedes A 220d and the Toyota Prius, both of which scored just four errors each. This means that they also performed solidly, although they did not reach the level of the absolute leader.
The Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee’d are in the middle of the table. These cars are not bad, but the tests showed clear areas where the manufacturers still have room for improvement.
An interesting nuance – Japanese and Korean models are often considered a benchmark of reliability, but this time they did not get to the very top positions. This is partly explained by the fact that some popular models, such as the Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3, were not tested at all. Therefore, the list reflects only those cars that actually participated in the tests.
Surprise: Golf receives a “red card”
The biggest source of discussion for these tests is the Volkswagen Golf. The model, which is considered a safe choice in the minds of many, received as many as 32 negative points this time and was at the bottom of the list. Seat Leon remained just above with 29 negative points.
Ironically, both cars are built on the same platform as the Audi A3. However, Audi’s construction turned out to be much stronger and of higher quality, which leads to a very clear conclusion: the same bases do not mean the same quality.
What this means for buyers
It is important to understand that no test is an absolute verdict. Different drivers drive differently, and maintenance determines the condition of the car in the long run. However, such tests show trends that should not be ignored.
