Morning report: Robert Whittaker stunned by ‘absolute giant’ Alex Pereira, feels new champion is still a better matchup than Israel Adesanya

Robert Whittaker expects a big size difference if he faces Alex Pereira in the near future.

The Brazilian kickboxing sensation won UFC gold at UFC 281 last weekend in his fourth octagon appearance. Pereira, who scored a combat sports hat-trick in Israel Adesanya, cleaned up his rival with a flurry of punches against the cage in the fifth and final round of the Main Event Tilt.

Former welterweight Whittaker was the closest to watching the bout as a former champion and top contender and couldn’t help but notice how big Pereira was compared to his middleweight opponent. Ahead of the fight, Pereira shared a top weight of 232 pounds in preparation for his big title fight. There were no problems.

“Like I said before, I’m not planning on the past [Paulo] Costa, but I think Pereira is a better matchup than Israel for me,” Whittaker said at the UFC 284 ticket launch press conference. “Because of the way he stands and the way he likes to move forward. I feel like the way he likes to fight gives me a greater advantage, but saying that, you’re a mate. (Laughter) How come no one mentions it The man is just a giant, he’s an absolute giant.

“I’ve come face-to-face with Israel, and I’m surprised to find out that Israel is pretty big. He looks tall and skinny, but he’s actually a big guy. Then Pereira confronts him. When I see him doing it, only his facial features get bigger, his legs and hands and forearms get bigger.. Who let this guy in? I think we can.

Whitaker has lost twice to Adesanya in recent years, leaving him unsure when he will be able to challenge for the title again this year. The window of opportunity has reopened now that the title has changed hands, but he may have to wait to see how a potential rematch between the two first plays out. Hmm.

But before that, Whittaker must restore his winning streak by defeating the aforementioned Costa at UFC 284 on February 11 in Perth, Australia.

“I knew that if I waited until November and waited to see who came out on top, I could have waited. [for] It’s a title shot,” Whitaker said. “The important thing is to do it. I’ve done it before… I just sit on the bench for a long time.” I’m not good at it (laughs). I can’t wait. I want to go there, I want to fight. The fact that it’s in Perth is even better. This is an Australian card and hops from where I live. So I’m really looking forward to going there and having a good result. ”

Pereira definitely looked huge against Adesanya at UFC 281. I’m not entirely sure how much of a factor it would be for Whittaker in a fight between the two, but I’m curious to know.
