More people in Saxony-Anhalt get a dog as a companion. The number of registered four-legged friends has been increasing for years.
Halle (Saale) – More people take one as companions dog to. The number of registered four-legged friends has been increasing for years. Does the number of bite attacks also follow this trend?
In Saxony-Anhalt the number of registered dogs has increased significantly. At the beginning of 2021, according to the state administration office, there were a total of 144,645 four-legged friends. A year earlier, around 131,100 dogs had been registered.
The number of recorded bite attacks from dogs, however, did not follow this trend. After 120 recorded cases in 2019, there were 116 last year. In 68 attacks people were bitten, in 41 other dogs, in seven cases other animals, 15 times property damage occurred.
Most of the bite attacks last year – as in 2019 – came from German Shepherds and their subspecies. According to the state administration office, a total of 24 incidents were registered. However, a particularly large number of German Shepherds were kept at just under 10,800.
With regard to the number of animals kept, the German Shepherds did not bite very often – 0.22 percent of the registered dogs had become conspicuous.
For comparison: four bite incidents were recorded in connection with Bavarian mountain sweathounds, of which only 378 animals were registered – this resulted in a percentage of 1.06. In the case of the Dogo Argentino breed, the Argentine mastiff, which was held almost 290 times, there were three incidents and thus a frequency of 1.04 percent.
According to statistics, the most frequently kept dog breed in Saxony-Anhalt is the Labrador Retriever. More than 15,700 of these four-legged friends are registered. Twelve of them took a bite in 2020 – that was just 0.08 percent. The German Shepherd Dog and the Jack Russell Terrier follow on the popularity scale with more than 10,100 specimens.
Looking at the number of registered dogs, which has been increasing for years, it seems unclear whether so many more people have actually bought four-legged companions, as the statistics show. The state capital Magdeburg only announced on Friday that the city watch would carry out a focus control over several weeks. Around 1000 dogs should be recorded and checked with a view to the dog tax and the chip and liability insurance.
In similar controls in 2007 and 2010, around 12.5 percent of unregistered dogs were found, in 2014 then 13.4 percent. As of March 1, 2021, 11,966 dogs were tax-registered in Magdeburg, more than ever before in the state capital.
“The question to be clarified is whether the number of dogs in Magdeburg has increased and the number of unreported cases still exists or whether more dog owners have become tax-honest,” said the city administration.
