It’s going on vacation and the suitcases are full. There is no room for a lot of toys. Fortunately, there are games for which you don’t have to take much with you. Here are a few ideas for your vacation.

At Tegel Airport, passengers walk through the arrivals hall in the airport building with their suitcases. There is not much space in the suitcase. It's good that you don't have to take much with you for many games. Photo: Jens Kalaene

Dice, pens, paper or old newspapers: for many games you don’t need any more. They are therefore also great for vacation. For example in the sun on the beach, in the rain in the holiday apartment or during a long train ride.

PEN AND PAPER: You can have a lot of fun with these two things. For example in the game of monster painting. Everyone first draws a head on their piece of paper. Then the paper is folded back and passed on. The next one only sees a piece of the neck and now paints the upper body. Again it is folded and passed on. One paints the legs, the next the feet. This is how funny monsters or fantasy creatures are created. You can also play other games with pen and paper: city, country, river, for example. Perhaps paper planes can still be tinkered with the full paper. Or you use it for the next idea.

CRAFTS: In this game, paper is folded and crumpled. The point is to make a tower out of old newspaper. There are no other aids. You compete against each other in two teams. The team that has built the tallest tower within a given time wins.

GUESSING: For many guessing games, all you need is your head. They are therefore ideal for on the go and can also be played during a hike, for example. How about the game Guess Animals? Someone thinks up an animal. The others ask questions: does it have fur? Can it fly The questions can only be answered with yes or no. Everyone can ask until he or she gets a no. Then it’s the next one. If you guess the animal, you get a point and think of a new animal.

DICE: The most famous dice game is probably Kniffel. But there is a lot more! For this simple game you need a dice and something to write on: it’s about collecting points. When it’s your turn, you can throw the dice as often as you want. The dice eyes are added as points.

If you roll a two and then a five, you have seven points. After each throw you decide whether to continue. However, as soon as you roll a six, it’s your turn and all your points are gone. You can avoid this by stopping in time. Then the points you rolled will be written down and are safe. The winner is whoever reaches 100 points first.

Do you have a mug or two with you in addition to the cube? Then you could use it to play a kind of mini basketball. The cube is the ball, the cups are the baskets. You and your teammate each put a mug in front of you. You determine the distance yourself. Then you try to hit your cup. Either you sit or you stand while throwing. Whoever hits the most frequently with the same number of throws wins.

If you feel like it, just take a look at what you have with you on vacation. You might even come up with the coolest game idea yourself.
