BUFFALO, NY – For the first time in their history, the Toronto Blue Jays had two shutouts in a doubles program on Sunday, scoring 15 points against the Texas Rangers without allowing a single one.
Hyun Jin Ryu gave just three hits and completed a third career shutout, helping the Toronto side defeat the Rangers 5-0 in Game 1.
Then, in the second game, Lourdes Gurriel slammed a grand slam in the first inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added his 31st homerun of the season and the Blue Jays beat the Rangers 10-0, completing the sweep of the doubles program and their series of three parts.
George Springer and Randal Grichuk also hit long balls in Game 2 for the Blue Jays, winners of their last four games.
At the mound, Steven Matz (8-4) and two relievers limited the Rangers to just three hits.
In Game 1, Ryu (9-5) was on duty for all seven innings of the game, striking out four batters and hitting a walk.
“To have a chance to win, your starting pitcher has to give you a chance,” said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo. Ryu and Matz have been excellent.
“Obviously we were productive on the offense, but it all started on the mound and our starters were sparkling. “
Springer was seen dancing in the dugout during the second duel. He described how much fun he’s having playing for the talented young team of the Blue Jays.
“It’s a sport that is already difficult. The more we focus on the details, the more we see that it is difficult, underlined the outfielder. But it’s nice to see what ‘Vladdy’ (Guerrero), Lourdes (Gurriel) and the others are doing.
“At the end of the day, it’s a game. You have to start every game in order to have fun. “
Since the team moved to Texas in 1972, the Rangers had never been shut out twice on the same day. On May 23, 1971, the Washington Senators were swept 5-0 and 11-0 in Detroit.
The Rangers have now lost their last five games.
Rangers 0 – Blue Jays 10 (2e match)
“I expect more from our team,” said manager Chris Woodward. We allowed 10 circuits in 20 rounds. This is not how we are going to win. “
Ryu had his first shutout since May 7, 2019 against the Atlanta Braves, while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“During my practice sessions in the pen before the All-Star break, I spoke with (pitching instructor) Pete (Walker) and we discussed that my arm angle was more. lower than before when throwing the ball, ”explained Ryu with the help of an interpreter.
“Today (Sunday) I was able to raise it again and it resulted in my shifting and other throws being a little faster,” he added.
Kolby Allard (2-6) allowed five runs, seven hits and a walk in five and one-third innings on the mound for the Rangers in the opening match. In the late afternoon, starter Mike Foltyniewicz (2-9) allowed the Blue Jays 10 points in one and two-thirds.
The first clash lasted an hour and 48 minutes, making it the shortest of the season in the Majors. The second duel was hardly longer, since it was concluded in one hour and 51 minutes.
