MI Cape Town Triumphs in SA20, Surging Past Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 Runs
MI Cape Town 181 for 8 (Esterhuizen 39, Brevis 38, Gleeson 2-22) secured an emphatic 76-run victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape 105 (Abell 30, Rabada 4-25, Boult 2-9, Linde 2-20) in a thrilling final at the Wanderers Stadium.
The Championship Handed to MI Cape Town
Rashid Khan’s MI Cape Town crowned themselves the new champions of the South African T20 League (SA20), thwarting Aiden Markram’s Sunrisers Eastern Cape from completing a historic three-peat. This victory marked their third defeat of the season against Sunrisers and a remarkable journey filled with high-scoring battles and close calls.
MI Cape Town’s Aggressive Batting Makes the Difference
Choosing to bat first, MI Cape Town felt at home, given all their top-five players play for the Lions at the Wanderers. They capitalized on the rarefied air, keeping up their high-scoring pace despite some wicket losses. Notably, they ended up scoring 181 for 8. Three of their batsmen achieved scores above 30, and all scored at strike rates of 150 or above.
One player, though, truly stood out: 21-year-old Dewald Brevis. He showcased his talent with a blistering 18-ball 38, earning a reputation for electric comingos. This performance solidified Brevis’ status as the standout young talent of the season.
MI Cape Town’s Web of Wickets
MI Cape Town’s demand for wickets did not cease; their bowlers returned to dismantle Sunrisers’ comeback attempts. Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada led the front line, sharing six wickets between them. Boult, in particular, impressively bowled medium-pace both ways during the powerplay, managing 4-0-9-2. Rashid Khan and George Linde added pressure with their fast and slower deliveries, completing a perfect culmination in the latter half by Rabada dismissing the last Sunrisers batter.
The second side managed to score only 105 runs in 18.4 overs, falling short by 76 runs. The statistics showcased a more focused and relentless approach from MI Cape Town both in batting and bowling.
A Comprehensive Win: All Formats Ticked Off the List
This championship win adds another feather to MI Cape Town’s cap. They now boast titles in every franchise T20 league they’ve participated: the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Champions League T20 (CLT20, now defunct), the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the Melbourne Limited-Over Tournament (MLC), the Indian Lalit Modi T20 (ILT20), and, most recently, the SA20.
Battling Powerplays and Critical Moments
Early on, Ryan Rickelton delivered a strong blitz against Marco Jansen, dropping 29 runs off the bowler in just nine balls, including four maximums. He hit off the back of lengths and exploited the air quality. However, Craig Overton’s slower pace frustrated Rickelton, who eventually mishit a catch towards mid-off.
Rassie van der Dussen also tried to capitalize on Overton’s slower balls but struggled with execution, falling to a stumping by Liam Dawson off 25 balls. Reeza Hendricks also suffered early losses, getting out for a duck.
Mid-Innings Vitality from Brevis
In the heart of the innings, Brevis played an instrumental role, recovering the momentum for MI Cape Town post-rickelton and van der dussen’s dismissals. He powered consecutive sixes against Dawson and faced Simelane, who got bowled out for 14 in fewer than six deliveries. Simelane, making his second SA20 appearance, lacked composure under pressure.
Brevis continued his open-fronted half-century with a remarkable one-handed over-the-roof six off Overton’s slower variation in the 15th over. Linde joined him, striking sixes off the same bowler. These shots kept MI Cape Town ahead of the run-rate.
Stricter Control: A Markram Strategy
Markram’s plan included targeting Simelane in the death overs, but Brevis had already inflicted heavy damage. In the 17th over, Brevis played an explosive sequence of 6, 6, 4 off Overton, securing his position in the lead. Delano Potgieter and Rabada’s contributions helped MI Cape Town surpass 180.
Bowling for Glory: MI Cape Town’s Final-Lineup
In the final bowling display, Boult’s powerplay bowling epitomized MI Cape Town’s strengths. After targeting David Bedingham with inswingers, Rabada dismissed him for a single run caught at short cover. Next, he had Jansen for a single run, drawing leading edges. Linde had Abell stumped in the 17th over, limiting his run-scoring to 30 off 25 balls.
Linde and Rashid Khan further tightened the screws, striking out without conceding boundaries. This left Sunrisers without any safe fielding options, leading to a quick end for the tournament.
Traversing a Journey from Last to First
Starting as the bottom-placed team in the previous two seasons of SA20, MI Cape Town’s consistent improvement saw them clinch their first title. This victory was all the more meaningful, given the stamina and team spirit demonstrated throughout the season.
