Damage to the masts of the sailing ship

A sailing ship from the Mexican navy sailed against the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. That happened during a promotion tour in the American city. The masts arrived against the bottom of the bridge and broke.

Nineteen were injured in the accident, four of them were seriously injured, says Mayor Eric Adams. All injuries are on boarders.

Of the accident, several videos circulate on social media. The images show that the ship, with a huge Mexican flag, is sailing under the bridge. The three masts partially break down. The ship then drove to the edge of the East River. Bystanders then run away from the quay.

At the time of the accident there was a lot of traffic on the iconic bridge that connects the Manhattan and Brooklyn districts. The bridge, which opened 1883, is a tourist attraction and a land of the city. More than 100,000 vehicles and 32,000 pedestrians use it daily.

The Mexican navy says the Cuauhtemoca training ship, so damaged that it cannot sail further. The condition of the staff and the equipment is checked by the Navy and local authorities, the statement states.

Ship on the way to 22 ports

Of Cuauhtemoc is a ship of more than 90 meters long and 12 meters wide. Every year the ship leaves after the lessons at the Military Navy School to complete the Cadet training. This year it left the port of Acapulco on the Mexican west coast on 6 April with 277 people on board.

The ship would then visit 22 ports in fifteen countries including Kingston in Jamaica, Havana in Cuba and New York. Reykjavik in Iceland, Bordeaux and Dunkirk in France were also planned.
