The war against Ukraine, tensions with the USA: In view of the global security situation, Chancellor Merz encourages the people of Germany at the turn of the year – and promises security and reforms.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for confidence despite global crises and is promoting the implementation of important reforms for the economy and the welfare state. “We have it in our own hands to overcome each of these challenges on our own,” said the CDU politician in his first New Year’s speech, according to the text of the speech that was distributed in advance. “We are not victims of external circumstances. We are not the pawns of major powers.”

The year 2026 could be a moment of departure, said the Chancellor. “That is the prospect that I want to open to you and to all of us.” It could be a year in which Germany and Europe build on decades of peace, freedom and prosperity with new strength. “For this we have to trust ourselves, our courage and our drive,” said Merz and added: “Let’s not listen to the fearmongers and the doom-mongers.” Germany has repeatedly reinvented itself and emerged stronger from crises.

“We live in a safe country”

With regard to the war in Ukraine, threats from Russia and the more difficult relationship with the USA, Merz said that he was aware that many people were worried about peace in the face of the uncertain world. “I tell you: We ensure our security. We live in a safe country.” In order for it to stay that way, the deterrence capability must be improved.

For the Chancellor, the renewal of freedom, security and prosperity will be the focus in the coming years: “The renewal of these foundations will only be possible if we secure our peace in freedom in Europe. But Russia is continuing its war of aggression against Ukraine with undiminished severity,” said Merz. This war also affects Germany: “Russia’s attack was and is part of a plan that is directed against the whole of Europe. Germany is also covered by sabotage, espionage and cyber attacks every day.”

Merz promises “fundamental reforms”

With regard to the domestic political challenges, the Chancellor highlighted the federal government’s reforms, among other things, for more growth and called for support for planned further ones, for example on the future of pensions. Quite a few said it was still too little and that it wasn’t noticeable yet, said Merz. They would be right.

After the introduction of the so-called new basic security and decisions on pensions, Germany will “have to decide on fundamental reforms next year so that our social systems remain financially viable in the long term.” Germany will reap the benefits of the reforms, even if it takes a certain amount of time.
