Worshippers flocked to a major Shinto shrine in central Tokyo in the waning hours of New Year’s Eve to pray for good luck.
Crowds gathered at Meiji Jingu in Shibuya Ward, and waited in line to usher in 2026.
The sound of a drumbeat at midnight signaled the arrival of the New Year. Visitors then proceeded under police guidance to the main hall. They threw monetary offerings into a wide fenced-in area, and made their wishes for the coming year.
A woman in her 40s from Hyogo Prefecture said she was transferred by her company in October last year, and hopes to excel at a new office this year.
A university student in Tokyo said he prayed for everyone’s health, and that his goal for this year is to become fluent in a foreign language.
Meiji Jingu officials said the shrine is crowded with worshippers, especially during the first three days of January. They are asking visitors to avoid peak congestion.
