Empowering Doctoral Candidates and Postdoctoral Researchers
Helmholtz Graduate Schools and Research Schools, present at nearly all Helmholtz Centers, provide doctoral students with essential skills, training, and networking opportunities. Recognizing the pivotal role of the postdoctoral period, Helmholtz is establishing Career Centers and a mentoring program for gifted PostDocs to foster career orientation and equip them with the skills needed to lead Helmholtz Young Investigators Groups. These groups allow junior scientists to independently pursue research in their specialized fields, fostering innovation and leadership.
Promoting gender Equality in Science
The Helmholtz Association is actively working to increase the representation of talented female scientists from both Germany and abroad. Two funding programs,‘Funding of first-time appointments of excellent women scientists (W2/W3)’ and ‘Funding to recruit top-level international women scientists (W3)’,support this policy. These initiatives aim to address the gender imbalance in scientific leadership and create a more inclusive research environment. According to UNESCO data, women represent only around 33% of researchers globally, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to promote gender equality in science.
