Luxury Car Sales Stumble in Indonesia
Indonesia’s once-thriving luxury car market is experiencing a significant downturn, with European brands like Volkswagen and Audi facing dwindling sales figures. Recent data reveals a concerning trend for these manufacturers, signaling a potential shift in consumer preferences.
Febuary 2025 sales figures paint a stark picture. audi recorded a mere two units sold, while Volkswagen managed only six. Even Chinese brands, such as Seres, struggled, selling just nine vehicles. these single-digit sales numbers highlight the challenges these brands face in the Indonesian market.
Mid-Range Brands Also Feel the Pinch
The sales slump isn’t limited to the highest-end luxury segment. Volvo Cars sold only 10 units, followed by KIA with 15 and Subaru with 17. These figures indicate a broader cooling in the automotive market beyond just the ultra-luxury sector.
Retail Sales mirror Wholesale Woes
Retail sales, representing vehicles sold directly to consumers, reflect a similar pattern. Audi and Volkswagen again reported the lowest numbers, with two and seven units sold, respectively. Volvo Cars moved 10 units, seres 11,Subaru 20,and Haval 21. these figures underscore the difficulties these brands are encountering in attracting Indonesian buyers.
National Car Sales Show Overall Growth
Despite the struggles of specific brands, overall national car sales in Indonesia present a more positive outlook. According to Gaikindo, the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association, February 2025 saw a total of 72,295 units sold, a considerable 16.73% increase compared to January’s 61,932 units. This growth suggests that while some brands are faltering, the overall market is expanding.
Year-over-year, February 2025 sales also exceeded those of February 2024 by 2.15%, representing an increase of 1,523 units. This positive trend offers a glimmer of hope after a challenging 2024, during which national car sales fell below one million units.
