Luton Town – Bournemouth 3-2: cherries beaten by Kal Naismith’s late goal

Allan Campbell’s goal was his first since he scored for Motherwell in a Scottish FA Cup match in April

Bournemouth suffered a setback in the push to promote when Kal Naismith’s goal in injury time gave Luton victory in a dramatic finale at Kenilworth Road.

Scott Parker’s side, one point clear of the championship lead at kick-off, fell behind on an own goal from Lloyd Kelly, the ball bouncing off his shin after Mark Travers saved with his feet from Elijah Adebayo .

Luton doubled their lead when midfielder Allan Campbell beat Travers from 20 yards for his first goal for the club, but Bournemouth established himself after the break and Emiliano Marcondes headed home a Jack Stacey cross.

Morgan Rogers equalized by firing into the roof of the net moments after stepping in as the only substitute for Naismith to snatch former Luton boss David Pleat’s 77th birthday victory with a left-footed shot.

The defeat was only Bournemouth’s third away match in the league and the three points brought Luton to 13th place, pending the results of the next kick-offs.

The visitors looked confident in possession from the start, with Ryan Christie forcing James Shea to make a one-handed first save from Jaidon Anthony’s angled ball in the area.

But they were pushed off their pace by Luton, who took the lead thanks to Kelly’s own goal after Sonny Bradley had scored a cross for the impressive Adebayo.

The referee initially awarded them a second when Cameron Jerome struck sideways in the net after Bournemouth failed to block a corner, but changed his mind after consulting his assistant.

The Hatters – who hadn’t played a league game since 11 December – were not to be proved wrong, however, and Naismith split Bournemouth’s defense in two with a pass to Campbell, who fired at home as the defenders retreated.

Jefferson Lerma curled a 25 yarder just wide in response to warn of what Bournemouths are capable of and the second half had only five minutes when Stacey cut from the right and Marcondes overtook Jordan Clark to narrow the gap.

Luton lost Campbell and Reece Burke to jabs and as they were adjusting, the cherries jumped to the level, Jamal Lowe cut to Rogers and Manchester City’s loaner taking home his first senior goal with emphasis.

The home team refused to give up and, although Travers reversed a fierce shot from Clark, he couldn’t deny Naismith, who took the corner seat after picking up a loose ball just outside the box.
