The Lakers’ signing of Luka Doncic marks more than just the acquisition of a star player. It heralds a major shift in the team’s culture and strategy, with a new support system arriving alongside him. This support team, led by individuals like Lara Beth Seager and Bill Duffy, is poised to play a significant role in shaping Doncic’s Lakers future.

Why the New Support Team Matters

Recalling the Lakers’ LeBron James signing in 2018, the team brought in not just James but also a robust entourage, including agent Rich Paul, business manager Maverick Carter, trainer Mike Mancias, and trusted confidante Randy Mims. This approach emphasizes the importance of having a supportive network around a high-profile player. The Lakers hope that Doncic’s new support team will vividly mirror this success.

“We’re going to partner with him and I should mention, too, his amazing team who is now part of our family led by Lara Beth [Seager] and Bill Duffy and the rest of the folks that are here today,” Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ executive vice president of basketball operations, stated during Doncic’s introductory news conference. “When we make decisions around superstar players, we partner and collaborate with them and that will be our process.”

Lara Beth Seager has been by Luka Doncic’s side since 2020, managing his endorsements with brands like Jordan Brand, Gatorade, and Panini. Beyond his endorsements, Seager oversees the Luka Doncic Foundation and 77X, his creative company. Her role extends to handling everything from his business endeavors to his charitable contributions.

Prior to her work with Doncic, Seager played a pivotal role in Dirk Nowitzki’s legendary career, assisting with significant moments such as his final home game, the unveiling of his statue, and his jersey retirement.

Bill Duffy and Quique Villalobos: Visionary Agents

Bill Duffy, known for his work in agent management and a candidate for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, brings a wealth of NBA experience to the table. A former NBA player, Duffy represents Hall of Famers Steve Nash and Yao Ming, and current stars like Anthony Edwards, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Scottie Barnes. His agency, BDA Sports Management, was acquired by WME in 2023.

Duffy first connected with Doncic when he was 15, during his time at Real Madrid. Quique Villalobos, based in Madrid and also with BDA Sports Management, serves as an international agent and worked in Doncic’s entourage during his time with Real Madrid and the Slovenian national team.

Javier Barrio and Anze Macek: Doncic’s Medical Team

Doncic’s medical team, comprised of Javier Barrio and Anze Macek, joined him in 2023. Barrio, a physiotherapist and podiatrist, and Macek, a strength and conditioning coach, were crucial to Doncic’s development while he was playing for the Mavericks and for the Slovenian national team.

Their presence is particularly significant given the extensive medical support Doncic has required during his career. When the Mavericks overhauled their medical staff in 2023, removing trainer Casey Smith, Doncic’s relationship with Barrio and Macek remained strong, underscoring their importance to his well-being.
