MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has taken decisive action against a motorcycle rider who survived a tragic collision that resulted from attempting a “Superman” stunt on the Marilaque (Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon) Highway.
Incident Overview
The LTO chief Assistant Secretary, Vigor Mendoza II, explained that the incident occurred on January 26, 2025, in Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay town, Rizal province. The stunt, which involved the rider flying over his motorcycle like Superman, resulted in a tragic crash involving two motorcycles. One rider tragically lost their life, while the other survived the accident and was subsequently summoned for an investigation.
Legal Consequences
A show cause order (SCO) was issued by LTO Calabarzon Regional Director Elmer Decena to the surviving rider, residing in Lipa City, Batangas province. The rider was asked to submit a written explanation for the reckless behavior and was summoned to appear before the LTO for a hearing.
Assistant Secretary Mendoza emphasized the severity of such actions, stating, “Although it was really tragic, that could have not happened if they just chose to be responsible motorcycle riders.”
Scope of the Incident
Beyond the death of one rider, the accident injured at least six other road users, highlighting the broader implications of such reckless behavior on public safety.
Potential Penalties
The rider faces possible penalties including license suspension or revocation if found to be an “improper person to operate a motor vehicle.” The SCO was executed under the charge of “recklessly or without reasonable caution and regard for the safety of others performed unsafe maneuvers.”
LTO’s Stance on Motorcycle Safety
The LTO has made it clear that reckless riding is unacceptable and that the agency will take stringent measures to ensure that road users adhere to safety protocols. Assistant Secretary Mendoza expects the rider to explain the circumstances fully, noting, “What is at stake here is the privilege given to him by the government to ride a motorcycle.”
Conclusion
This case underscores the importance of responsible motorcycling practices and the severe consequences that can result from engaging in dangerous stunts. The LTO’s action sends a clear message that such behavior cannot and will not be tolerated.
As a community, it is crucial to prioritize road safety and to advocate for responsible riding practices. By doing so, we can significantly reduce the number of accidents and ensure a safer road environment for all.
