European Moose Spotted Wandering Through Austria

The wandering moose, nicknamed Emil, has captured public interest as it travels across European borders.

A European moose, known as Los Emil, continues its journey through Austria after being spotted in the Czech republic and Slovakia earlier this year, according to the APA. The moose has reportedly crossed the Danube River again and is now located south of it in the Amstetten district, situated between Vienna and Salzburg.

The APA notes that the moose had been moving north of the Danube in recent days, seemingly heading towards the czech Republic border.

In Austria, the moose has been sighted in several districts, including Mistelbach, Korneuburg, Tullna, Melka, and St. Pölten. In St. Pölten, train operations were disrupted for several hours in the first week of September due to the animal’s presence.

It is believed that the moose originated from Poland and entered Austria via the Czech Republic.

The journey of this young moose has generated notable public interest in both the Czech Republic and Austria. Authorities in both countries have urged residents not to scare or approach the animal, wich typically lives alone and can grow to over two meters in height and weigh more than half a ton.

Moose Sightings Across Europe

“The Czech and Austrian authorities asked the inhabitants not to scare the lot and not approach it.”

the appearance of a moose so far south and west of its typical range is unusual, but not unprecedented. Experts believe that habitat loss and climate change may be contributing to the increased dispersal of moose populations.
